What Is Citation Rate?

Citation rate is the share of AI answers in your category that cite your domain as a source — the difference between being talked about and being pointed to.

Definition

Citation rate measures how often AI engines attach your website as a source when they answer questions in your category. If buyers ask one hundred questions and your domain appears as a cited source in nine answers, your citation rate is 9%. It is stricter than a brand mention: the engine did not just name you, it staked its answer on your content and offered the user a path to your site.

Why it matters

AI answers increasingly come with footnotes: Perplexity numbers its sources, Google AI Overviews attach link cards, ChatGPT search cites inline. Those citations do two jobs at once. They send the referral traffic that survives zero-click behavior, and they signal that the engine treats your domain as evidence, not decoration. Engines pick sources they can parse, trust and quote — which means citation rate is one of the few AI-search levers that responds directly to the quality of your own pages, not just to off-site noise.

Frequently asked questions

Citation rate vs mention rate?

A mention is your brand name appearing in the answer text. A citation is your domain attached as a source. Mentions build awareness; citations build authority and still send the clicks that zero-click answers leave behind.

Which AI engines show citations?

Perplexity shows numbered sources by default. Google AI Overviews attach link cards. ChatGPT with search enabled cites sources inline. Gemini appends links in some answers. Copilot cites sources too. The pattern is the same everywhere: a small set of domains wins most of the citations.
