What Is an Answer Engine?
An answer engine is a system that answers questions directly instead of returning a list of links — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews are the ones your buyers already use.
Definition
An answer engine takes a natural-language question, gathers evidence from its index and the live web, and writes a direct answer — usually a recommendation, a comparison or a how-to — with sources attached. Where a classic search engine says "here are ten pages, good luck", an answer engine says "here are the three options worth your time, and why". The unit of competition is no longer the ranking slot; it is the mention inside the answer.
Why it matters
Search results pages offer ten blue links and multiple chances to be chosen. Answers offer a shortlist — and shortlists concentrate. When an engine names two or three tools for a job, those brands split the entire demand and everyone else gets nothing, not even the impression. That concentration is why AI visibility is binary in a way SEO never was: you are in the answer or you do not exist for that buyer. It is also why the measurement changed — from position on a page to presence in an answer.
What to do about it
- Measure presence first: run your category's buyer questions through the major engines and count who gets named.
- Feed the sources engines read: comparison pages, reviews, community threads, your own quotable content.
- Keep your site engine-readable: crawlable, fast, structured, with clear answers to the questions buyers ask.
- Track over time — engine shortlists reshuffle as sources and models change.
Frequently asked questions
Answer engine vs search engine?
A search engine returns links and lets you do the reading. An answer engine does the reading and returns a conclusion, with sources attached. For brands the difference is brutal: search engines give ten slots on page one; answer engines name a shortlist of two or three.
Which answer engines matter most?
ChatGPT (search enabled), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot cover most buyer research today. The mix shifts by audience — developers lean Perplexity and ChatGPT, mainstream consumers meet AI Overviews inside Google without choosing it.
