What Are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown above search results. They change click behavior: being ranked #1 no longer guarantees being seen.

Definition

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answer boxes that appear at the top of Google search results for many queries, summarizing an answer from multiple sources with citation links. They sit above the classic ten blue links — which means the first thing a searcher reads is increasingly a synthesis, not a result list.

Why it matters

The click economics are brutal: industry analyses estimate that clicks to the #1 organic result drop by roughly a third when an AI Overview appears, and a majority of searches already end without any click at all. If the Overview answers the question and does not cite you, your #1 ranking is a trophy behind glass. (These are third-party estimates, not our measurements — direction matters more than the decimals.)

What to do about it

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Not meaningfully for organic queries. You can influence whether you are cited by improving structure, authority and freshness — the same levers as GEO.

Do AI Overviews cite sources?

Yes, they show citation links — but only a few per answer. Those slots are the new high-value real estate.
